About the Task Force on Elder Substance Abuse Awareness & Prevention (ESAAP)

Awareness and Prevention of Elder Substance Misuse The task force of service providers from the Seacoast has the following goals:

  • Identifying those elderly at risk for alcoholism
  • Discussing issues of treatment and denial in a positive and empowering manner
  • Educating the public about the seriousness of elder substance abuse
  • Sharing expertise and providing technical assistance to other organizations having contact with the elderly

The Task Force In A Nutshell

The primary purpose of ESAAP is to identify area professionals and bring them together to share and build expertise in working with elders who abuse substance. The following provides a nutshell history of ESAAP other projects.

1988: Task Force began. Outreach to Elderly High-Rises to reach shut-in alcoholics
  Began the column Reflections in The VOICE (a newsletter sent to 5,000 Seacoast elders) to help provide information to the public about alcohol and aging
  Sponsored a Public Forum: Aging & Alcohol: The Impact on Families
1989: Planned Clergy workshop on Elder Alcoholics. Only had one clergy person sign up
1990: Affiliated with the NH Coalition on Substance Abuse & the Elderly
1991: Wrote grant for film production
1992-3: Produced film: Elderly Alcoholism: The Many Faces of Family Intervention
1994: Sponsored In conjunction with HCA Portsmouth Pavilion: Professional Obligation & Response to Elder Alcoholism. This was a forum for professional.
1995: Initiated a Support Group for Caregivers of Elderly Alcoholics (10 Weeks)
  Developed an internship program to work on alcohol & aging issues
  Met with Robert Pierce from the NH Liquor Commission to both inform the Commission of issues of aging and alcohol and receive information regarding NH laws around substance abuse/ misuse.
1996: Developed a pamphlet to address Aging & Alcohol Designed & Printed
1997-8: Distributed pamphlet to local health clinics, agencies, hospitals, and medical offices.
  Designed and implemented Taxi Survey, meetings with Taxi Commission. This was in response to local taxis delivering alcohol to homebound seniors. The survey was to ascertain concerns of the Taxi drivers or owners in providing this function to intoxicated/ physically compromised elders
1999: Began conceptualization of an Aging and Alcohol Website
2000-1: Began formulating a grant for Website
2001-2: Took a Year's Sabbatical from meetings
2002: Re-established the Task Force after a year's sabbatical
  Completed Grant for Website and began submission process
2003: Grant from State of New Hampshire Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention & Recovery awarded to build an Aging & Alcohol Awareness Website
2004: Website executed
2006 The Task Force merged with the Rockingham County Community Resource Network, Inc. and the Alliance for Community Health. The Task Force remains active through their activities.
